What kind of dogs are they?
Alaskan huskies: a working type, extremely loud, and silent the moment they run.
Alaskan huskies, almost without exception, and they are not what most visitors picture.
The Siberian husky is a recognised breed: symmetrical, thick-coated, frequently blue-eyed, and the one on every calendar. The Alaskan husky is not a breed at all. It is a working type — a mix selected over generations for stamina, appetite for running, foot durability and temperament. They come in every colour, they are leaner than the show dogs, and they are considerably faster.
The other thing nobody warns you about is the noise. A hundred dogs in a yard, watching harnesses come out, produce a sound you can hear from the car park and cannot easily describe. It is not distress. It is dogs that have worked out what is about to happen and are furious to be still in it.
Then the brake comes up, the sled moves, and it stops. Completely. Runners on snow, dogs breathing, and nothing else at all. That switch is the single most repeated observation in every review of every operator, and it is the reason people book a second one.
How it works
Six things about the mechanics
None of them are difficult, and all of them are easier if somebody has said them first.
- You stand, you do not sit
Both feet on the runners at the back, hands on the bar. It is more physical than it looks and considerably warmer than sitting, because you are working.
- The brake is a bar you stand on
Push down with a foot and metal teeth dig into the snow. It is the only control that matters, and the briefing spends most of its two minutes on it.
- You do not steer
The lead dogs follow the guide sled ahead. Your job is speed and staying on. Corners are about leaning, not turning.
- Never let go of the sled
The single rule everywhere in the sport. A team without a driver keeps running happily and somebody has to go and get them.
- You swap halfway
On almost every self-drive safari the pair changes places at the turning point, so both people get the runners and both get the view from the sled.
- It is quieter than you expect
No engine, no wind noise at ten to twenty kilometres an hour, and the snow absorbs everything. People go quiet within about a minute.

Is dog sledding difficult?
No. You stand on the runners, you keep your weight over the sled and you use the brake on the corners. The briefing takes about two minutes and the guide leads the whole way. Being cold is a bigger risk than falling off.
How fast do the sleds go?
Roughly ten to twenty kilometres an hour, which feels faster than it is because you are standing, close to the ground and travelling in near silence.
Do you steer the sled?
Barely. The lead dogs follow the sled in front, so your job is controlling speed with the brake and leaning into the corners. Nobody is navigating.
What happens if you fall off?
You are told the one rule for exactly this reason: hold on. If you do come off, the guide stops the line ahead and the team is caught. It happens rarely and it is not dangerous at ten kilometres an hour on snow.
