The short ride

Husky ride at Santa Claus Village: thirty minutes on the Arctic Circle

It is the cheapest husky ticket in Rovaniemi by a wide margin, it takes half an hour, and it sits inside the one place in Lapland that everybody visits anyway. For a family with small children and a day already full, it is very often the correct answer — and it is not a safari, which is the only thing worth being clear about.

Is it enough

Is a thirty-minute husky ride enough?

Right for small children and a full day. Not enough if the sledding is the trip.

It depends entirely on who is asking, and the honest answer splits cleanly in two.

For a family with children under about eight, yes. Half an hour in a sled under a reindeer skin at minus fifteen is a genuinely good length. It is long enough to be an event and short enough that nobody gets cold, bored or difficult. Add that Santa Claus Village has the post office, the reindeer, the shops and the Arctic Circle line, and you have a full day that cost you seventy dollars for the husky part.

For an adult who came to Lapland for the dog sledding, no. Thirty minutes as a passenger is a taste. You will not drive, you will not get past the first stretch of trail, and you will spend the flight home wondering about the six-kilometre version. If dog sledding is the reason for the trip, spend the difference.

The good news is that these are not mutually exclusive on a week-long trip, and the village ride is cheap enough to be an add-on rather than a decision.

The village itself

Five things at Santa Claus Village worth knowing

Since you are going anyway, and most of it is free.

  • The Arctic Circle runs through it

Marked as a line across the central square, with a sign. Crossing it is free and it is the photograph everybody takes.

  • It is eight kilometres north of the city

On highway 4, towards Ivalo. A regular bus runs from central Rovaniemi and takes about twenty minutes.

  • The post office is a working one

You can send a card with an Arctic Circle postmark, or have it held until December.

  • There are reindeer as well as huskies

Separate operators, separate tickets, and a reindeer sleigh is a completely different ride — slower, quieter and older.

  • Entry to the village is free

You pay for the individual activities. That makes it a reasonable place to spend a half-day even if you only book the husky ride.

If thirty minutes turns out not to be enough, the six-kilometre self-drive safari is the tour most people wish they had booked.
