Husky tours in Rovaniemi without snow: summer and autumn

Between April and December there are no sleds anywhere in Lapland, and that catches out a surprising number of people who book a summer trip to Rovaniemi expecting one. What the same farms do instead is run carts on wheels and open the kennels — and with children, that is arguably the better visit.

Quick answer

Sled tours in Rovaniemi run only from early December to the first week of April, because they need snow. From May to November the same farms offer kennel visits and cart rides on wheels, from $86. The dogs are the same and the experience is slower, greener and considerably warmer.

What runs instead

What can you do with the huskies in summer?

Kennel visits all year, and cart rides on wheels in the green season.

Two things, and both are honest about what they are.

A kennel visit. Two hours at the farm with the dogs off harness, usually including the puppies, and the same conversation with the musher about how the teams are kept. The winter version costs the same and is the better half of many people’s husky day anyway. From $86.

A cart ride. The same dogs pulling a wheeled cart along a forest track instead of a sled on snow. It is slower, noisier and dustier, and it is a real dog-powered ride rather than a demonstration. Several Rovaniemi farms run these in autumn, which is the best season for it — cool enough for the dogs to work properly and with the colour in the trees.

What it is not is the winter experience. There is no snow, no silence and no reindeer skin, and the photographs look completely different. Anyone whose mental image is the green-sky, white-forest one should come between December and April.

Five things to know about husky tours without snow

Different activity, different expectations, and one genuine advantage.

  • Autumn is better than summer

September and October are cool enough for the dogs to run properly and the forest is at its best. Midsummer runs are shorter because the dogs overheat.

  • It is much warmer for you

Which with small children is a real advantage. No thermal suits, no minus twenty, no twenty-minute dressing routine.

  • The dogs are less frantic

They are working animals in their off season. There is less of the pre-run noise and less speed, which some visitors prefer and some find flat.

  • Kennel visits are unchanged

The best part of a farm visit — time with the dogs and honest answers about how they live — is identical in July and January.

  • Do not book a summer trip expecting a sled

There are none. Any listing promising a sled ride in July is on wheels, and it should say so.

If snow is what you came for, the season is short and the month matters.

Common questions

Husky tours without snow, answered

Can you do a husky tour in Rovaniemi in summer?

Not on a sled. Sleds need snow and the season runs early December to the first week of April. From May to November the same farms run kennel visits and cart rides on wheels.

What is a husky cart ride?

The same dogs pulling a wheeled cart along a forest track instead of a sled on snow. It is slower and dustier than a sled ride and it is a genuine dog-powered ride rather than a demonstration.

When does the husky season start in Rovaniemi?

Early December in most years, occasionally late November if the snow has arrived and the trail holds. It ends in the first week of April.

Is a summer husky tour worth it?

As a kennel visit, yes — it is the same two hours with the dogs as in winter and it is far more comfortable with small children. As a substitute for a winter sled ride, no.

Are the dogs still active in summer?

Less so, and deliberately. They are working animals in their off season, runs are shorter and the farms avoid the warmest hours. Autumn is the better green-season month for a cart ride.
